During the War Between the States, the Confederate Army had to divert troops to deal with a rebellious county in Mississippi which had declared its neutrality and was threatening to secede from the State. Based on that historical event, this lavish story centers around the unlikely romance between the dapper newspaper publisher Keith Alexander (Heflin) and the beautiful and high-spirited heiress of an immense multi- generational fortune, Morna Dabney (Hayward). Morna's abolitionist father, Hoab Dabney (Bond) is determined to keep the war out of his homeland and he and a rag-tag army stand against a mighty Confederate force in order to maintain the independence of his vast estate and its inhabitants.
