So Red the Rose is an ambitious Southern drama that plays like a warm-up for the better-known Gone With the Wind. Valette Bedford (Margaret Sullavan) is the aristocratic mistress of a sprawling Mississippi planation, whose sheltered lifestyle is rent asunder by the tragic War Between the States. All that sustains her during the conflict's darkest days is her love for her distant cousin, Duncan Bedford (Randolph Scott), who initially opposes the war, but later has a change of heart and accepts a commission as a Confederate officer. Despite the invasion of their plantation by Yankee troops, Sullavan holds her family together even after her mansion is burned to the ground and the slaves revolt. Also starring Walter Connelly and Robert Cummings.
