Beautiful young Rachel Donelson (Susan Hayward) is unhappily married to the abusive Lewis Robards (Whitfield Connor) when she meets the handsome young Andrew Jackson (Charlton Heston). When Robards abandons her in Natchez, Mississippi and files for divorce, Rachel and Jackson marry. Unfortunately, upon their return to Tennessee, they learn that the di vorce proceedings were never final ized. With both of their reputations sullied by their unintentional adul tery, the couple undergo a second wedding ceremony and attempt to live in peace within a community that refuses to accept them. The storyline extends through Jackson's commis sion as General during the War of 1812 to his campaign for the U.S. Presidency. Tragically, though she has faithfully remained at his side throughout their many trials, Rachel dies of heart failure before Jackson takes the oath of office.
