Following the Civil War, former Confederate soldier Kirk Jordan (Randolph Scott) is fighting a new battle to make a living in the hostile atmosphere that greets all ex-Confederates in Yankee-occupied Texas. But after he meets the beautiful firebrand Ivy Preston (Joan Bennett), Kirk hits upon a bold plan to help his fellow Southerners. In order to avoid a devastating cattle tax, he leads her family's herd of 10,000 to the just-completed railroad in Abilene, Kansas with the evil Carpetbagger Isaiah Middlebrack (Robert Barrat) in hot pursuit. Will Kirk successfully blaze a trail to bring the coun try back together, or will he join Ivy in her dangerous scheme to re-ignite war between the North and South?
